Description: This poster advertises "American Guide Week," taking place November 10th to 16th of an unspecified year. American Guide Week celebrated the efforts of the Federal Writers' Project, a Works Progress Administration agency designed to give work to white-collar workers during the Great Depression under the umbrella of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. The Federal Writers' Project worked on a variety of publications, but is best known today for the project celebrated by this poster, the American Guide Series. As the poster notes, the American Guide Series aimed to describe America to Americans, state by state. Employees with the Federal Writers' Project worked to create a guidebook for each state, as well as guidebooks for many more defined areas such as cities, highway routes (such as Route One), and specific rural areas (such as Lima and Allen County, Ohio). Description: 1955 calendar advertising and themed around Ohio author and conservation advocate Louis Bromfield's famed Malabar Farm in Lucas, Ohio. The full-color twelve-month calendar includes color photographs by Joe Munroe and short caption essays by Louis Bromfield. Calendar verso pages feature longer essays on the history and rehabilitation of Malabar and vignettes of farm life also written by Bromfield. The Friends of the Land Collection (1930-1960) contains the papers of the Friends of the Land (1940-1959), a prominent national soil conservation education organization headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. FOTL produced an international literary arts quarterly, THE LAND (edited by New Deal agriculture writer Russell Lord) in addition to several members' only publications (LAND LETTER) and informational pamphlets. They also hosted annual conferences; ran conservation tours, teacher training labs, and workshops; and operated as a national clearinghouse for conservation information. Ohio farmer and novelist Louis Bromfield was active in the organization. Much of the collection reflects the career and interests of FOTL Executive Secretary Ollie Fink, who was a prominent conservation education pioneer in Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: The photograph shows a model of the U.S. Capitol in process of being built as a teaching tool for the Ohio State School for the Blind. The model is depicted from the West. The United States Capitol is the meeting place of the United States Congress, the legislature of the Federal government of the United States. Located in Washington, D.C., it sits atop Capitol Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall. Though not in the geographic center of the District of Columbia, the Capitol is the origin by which the quadrants of the District are divided. Officially, both the east and west sides of the Capitol are referred to as "fronts." Description: This poster, titled "Your Victory Garden Counts More Than Ever," encourages Americans to grow victory gardens during World War II. The poster measures 19" x 21" (48.26 x 53.34 cm). During World War II (1941-1945), many people supplemented the food they had available for personal use by planting vegetable gardens, both to support the war effort and due to food shortages and rationing. The gardens were promoted widely by the government and industry, and were known as "victory gardens" due to their importance to the war effort. Gardens were planted during World War I as well, but were called "war gardens" until the end of the war, when the term "victory garden" came into use. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photographs of Yvonne and friends Grace, Gwen, Cecilia and Petty at Howard University. This is one of several pages taken from a scrapbook that belonged to Yvonne Walker-Taylor. Walker-Taylor was the daughter of Bishop Dougal Ormonde Beaconfield Walker, the 66th Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and president of Wilberforce University in the 1940s. Walker-Taylor later went on to follow in his footsteps, and became one of the first female African American college president in the United States when she was named president of Wilberforce in 1984. Description: This aerial view of the Y-Bridge in Zanesville, Ohio, shows its location at the confluence of the Muskingum and Licking rivers. The bridge, which connects Zanesville with Natchez and West Zanesville, is part of the historic National Road (Cumberland Road), the first federally planned and funded interstate highway. The National Road linked older eastern communities with the emerging frontier settlements of the Northwest Territory. From 1825 to 1838, the National Road was extended across Ohio. The first Y-Bridge was opened to the public in 1814 but collapsed into the river in 1818. A second, stronger bridge (1819-1832) was built on the same site, but it was condemned thirteen years later when twelve-inch-thick ice in the river weakened the superstructure. The third Y bridge (1832-1900) stood until 1900. On January 4, 1902, the fourth Y bridge (1902-1979) was opened for foot passengers. Ten days later, streetcars and wagons began to cross the bridge. In 1979, the fourth Y bridge was judged unsafe. A fifth bridge opened on November 9, 1984. The Y-Bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places. This image of the Y-Bridge was among the photographs produced by the Federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) between 1935 and 1943. One of the best-known WPA programs, the Federal Writers Project, published the American Guide Series, travel guides to the existing 48 states and for the District of Columbia. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This is a lithograph of an oil painting of Shawnee leader Tenskwatawa, or The Prophet, published in "History of the Indian Tribes of North America" by Thomas Loraine McKenney and James Hall. Tenskwatawa worked with his brother Tecumseh to unite American Indian tribes in the Northwest Territory to defend themselves against white settlers. The title across bottom of the page reads "Tens-Kwau-Ta-Waw." Thomas Loraine McKenney (1785–1859) served as the U.S. Superintendent of Indian trade from 1816–1822 and superintendent of Indian affairs from 1824-1830. James Hall (1793–1868) was a lawyer, writer, and editor who lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1833 until his death in 1868. He received degrees from Fisk University, Yale University and Harvard University and taught at Howard University in Washington. He was a minister of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and was awarded the Doctor of Divinity degree by Wilberforce University. He served as president of Wilberforce University in the 1940s, founded of Central State College in 1948 and served as the first director of the Afro-American Historical and Cultural Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the 1970s.
